Senior Expert (m/f/x) – Digital Materials Development

Your Future

  • Innovation: You actively shape the future of digital materials development and accelerate the path toward computer-aided material and process design (Integrated Computational Materials Engineering – ICME). In this role, you work in a highly innovative, international environment, leverage cutting-edge technologies, and act as a central interface between Materials & Processes, Data & Simulation, and external research institutions.
  • Digital Materials Development: You create and optimize concepts for model‑ and data‑driven materials and process development in nonferrous metals (Cu, Ti, Al) and assess their potential for production and R&D.
  • Project Leadership & Collaboration: You lead or co-lead internal and external projects, maintain technical exchanges with universities, research institutions, and partners, and manage alliances within consortia or collaborations.
  • Modeling & Data Science: You systematically model structure–property relationships (microstructure, mechanical and technological properties, damage mechanisms), develop hybrid models (physical + data‑driven), and leverage machine learning (ML) and AI to optimize materials and processes.
  • Integration & Interfaces: You build interfaces between data sources, models, and production systems, integrate data into scalable pipelines, and connect experimental results with simulations.
  • Experimental Validation: You plan and coordinate data acquisition from manufacturing and laboratory environments, analyze the data, and use it for model validation, algorithm development, and process optimization.
  • Digital Navigator & Trend Monitoring: You track global technology trends, identify opportunities and synergies for digital materials development, and translate them into strategic recommendations for R&D.

Your Potential

  • Qualification: You hold a PhD/Doctorate in Computational Materials Science Engineering, Physics, Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy/Solid State Physics, Thermodynamics, or a comparable field. Postdoc experience, international research programs, or junior professorships are a plus.
  • Technical Expertise: You bring solid experience in digital materials and process development, particularly in material models, hybrid modeling (physical + data‑driven), and the application of machine learning (ML) or neural networks (AI). Knowledge of nonferrous metals (Cu/Ti/Al) and metallurgical processes is advantageous.
  • Software & Data Skills: You are proficient in Python, SQL databases, and high-performance computing (HPC) and develop and maintain structured material and process databases. You are familiar with interfaces (APIs), materials databases, CAE software (e.g., ANSYS, COMSOL), and domain-specific ontologies (OWL/RDF).
  • Methodological Competence: You combine data‑driven approaches with experimental validation and have experience in experimental planning, algorithm development, data integration, and statistical analysis of complex datasets.
  • Personality & Work Style: You collaborate closely with colleagues from multiple disciplines, particularly in the context of cutting-edge research, contributing effectively to the success of projects.
  • Internationality & Mobility: You are fluent in English, speak German at a professional level, and are willing to travel internationally, particularly to the USA.
